Berat is one of the most beautiful and ancient cities in Albania.

If you are planning a trip and looking for things to do in Berat Albania, you will find historic districts, a medieval fortress, panoramic views of the Osum River valley, and the atmosphere of a true open-air museum.

The city is located in central Albania, about:

In 2008 Berat became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and even earlier, in 1961, the city was officially declared a museum city.

Today about 40,000 people live in Berat, while the wider region has roughly 70,000 residents.

The city is home to dozens of Christian churches and the Cathedral of St. Demetrius. There are also unique religious mosques and Bektashi tekkes.

Shared minibuses run daily between the cities.

Mangalem — the Historic Muslim Quarter

Mangalem sits at the base of the hill where Berat Castle stands.

This neighborhood is famous for its narrow streets and white Ottoman houses.

Historic landmarks include:

  • Sultan Mosque (1512)

  • Helvetian Tekke (1781–1782)

  • Shen Qerimi Tekke

Walking through Mangalem feels like stepping into a medieval town.

Gorica — the Christian Quarter

Historically this district was home to Orthodox Christian communities, and several old churches remain here.

Notable churches include:

From the courtyard of St. Thomas Church you can enjoy one of the best views of the old town and castle.

Gorica Stone Bridge

The stone bridge connects the two historic districts of Berat.

It was originally built during the Ottoman period and later restored in 1930.

Today it is one of the most popular spots for evening walks.

Berat Castle

The main landmark of the city is Berat Castle, located on top of the hill above the old town.
