Brief history of Kanine Fortress
Skanderbeg’s wedding in Kanine Fortress
Why visit Kanine Fortress?
The history of the country’s independence is directly related to both the history of the fortress and the name of Skanderbeg (in English — Skanderbeg).
His wedding to Dominika, the daughter of local prince Gjergj Arianiti, took place here.
However, the wedding ceremony itself later took place elsewhere — in a church near Shkodra.
Interesting to know: Gjergj Kastrioti was born into a Catholic family in the city of Dibra (today a city in North Macedonia). He received the Muslim name Skender-bey (in Albanian – Skenderbeu) in the Ottoman Empire.
At that time, the Ottomans took all sons from noble families in the occupied territories between the ages of 6 and 12.
The children lived in Turkey and were trained in the military institutions of the time (similar to “Suvorov schools” in Russia), receiving military ranks and converting to Islam.
Then they gained the status of janissaries and led Ottoman detachments in new campaigns.
Later, outstanding janissaries became governors of lands and ruled the territories conquered by the Ottomans.
Skanderbeg, having undergone military training with the Ottomans, remained loyal to Albania and led the country’s liberation movement, delivering several crushing defeats to the Ottoman troops.

Weekend route from Vlora to Kanine
Kanine sign – gathering place before the hike
Gathering place: Vlora, turnoff to Kanine.
At the turn of the main road, there is a small road leading off to the side. It is this road that leads to the fortress.
You can recognize the start of the route by the large “Kanine” sign above the road.
Coordinates of the arch with the “Kanine” sign: 40.458131, 19.498296
Route features:
- meeting point on the road near the arch;
- route length to the fortress entrance is about 3.5 km;
- walking time uphill is about 1 hour if not in a hurry;
- total route time (ascent, exploration of ruins, descent) is about 3 hours.

The road up to Kanine village
After starting, you walk on an asphalt road that goes uphill.
The road’s incline is about 30 degrees.
The road winds and passes by a hollow where olive trees grow and goats graze.
If you go in autumn, you will see the local population harvesting olives.
Women manually collect olives directly from the grass under the trees.

Fortress entrance
From the road passing through Kanine village, there is an inconspicuous turn to the fortress.
The turn is located next to a shop and the Kalaja restaurant on the second floor.
You will see a sign with information about the cultural site and visitor prices.
This is the place where you should turn onto the trail to Kanine Castle.
After walking along a narrow, stone-paved path, you will reach the fortress entrance.
Turn coordinates near the road: 40.443213, 19.520081

Panoramas from Kanine Fortress: relaxation with a view
At the entrance, you will not find a controller.
The controller who collects the payment does not sit in one place — he moves around the inner territory.
He will notice you and will definitely approach you. The space at the top is open, and every visitor is visible from afar.
Tip: start exploring the fortress by moving clockwise. This option is more interesting: you will see more details and views.
We walked along the right wall to the corner, where we found a spot with expansive views of the mountains and Kanine village.
There we stopped to have homemade pastries and drink tea from a thermos.

Remains of Kanine Fortress walls
Today, the fortress territory is a spacious lawn with rare fragments of fortress walls.
The fortress was thoroughly destroyed by the Ottomans – the conquerors tried to erase the idea of freedom and independence in Albania.
However, despite their efforts, the people remember Skanderbeg, who is a symbol and national hero of Albania.
Visiting Kanine Fortress means touching the history and tradition of the country.
Today, the fortress space is a sunlit lawn on a mountain peak. However, the memory and tradition of freedom are the most essential things here.

Observation platform: the best place for photos
Continuing to explore the wall, we walked around it to the observation platform.
We took pictures near the flagpole with the Albanian flag.
On Albania’s Independence Day, November 28, 2024, many Albanians came here to meet and view the city from above.

Parking near the peak
There is an entrance to the fortress via steps from the village side, as well as a car access road and another trail to the peak.
Without entering Kanine village, you need to turn left.
The turn is located 50 meters past the mosque. Here you turn and drive 100 meters along the cliff to a free parking lot.
Leave your car and walk up to the fortress.
The parking lot is marked on Google Maps.

Flag Tradition: history and significance
On Albania’s Independence Day, many Albanians come to Kanine’s observation platform to mark this important day by visiting the historic site.
As a rule, families with children come.
The “Flag Tradition” is a tradition of freedom and independence.
On “Flag Day,” national Albanian flags are displayed everywhere — red with a black eagle in the center.

Kanine Fortress: tourist tips
The “Route from Vlora to Kanine” is a “weekend route” and is accessible to most tourists.
It is intended for those who want to walk, touch everything with their hands, and explore independently.
The path is easy and interesting.
Often, goats and sheep graze along the road — they enliven the landscape, moving between the trees.
In spring, in May-June, many wild turtles crawl onto the mountain trails, and they can also be seen on the trail to the fortress.
