The Gjipe-Jale Hiking Trail — Coastal Route with Stunning Views
The Gjipe-Jale hiking trail (hereafter referred to as Gjipe-Jale) runs between the two beaches of Gjipe and Jale. The trail is 7 km long and takes about 2.5 hours to complete.
Route Information
The Gjipe-Jale trail starts from one of the beaches.
The direction depends on your goal. Where do you want to arrive?
I walked from Gjipe Beach to Jale Beach. After 2 hours, I was already near Jale Beach.
The trail begins at the restaurant on the southern side of Gjipe Beach.
Important: There is a sign indicating the trailhead in the bushes near the restaurant.
Tip: The restaurant staff knows about the trail, so you can ask them where it is.
Breakfast at the Campsite
The cost of an overnight stay at the tent campsite includes breakfast.
Breakfast consisted of: a small juice pack, a fried egg, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, local white cheese, and bread.
This is the standard breakfast at tent campsites.
In the morning, breakfast was delayed by 30 minutes. It was served at 8:30 AM instead of the scheduled 8:00 AM.
Because of this, I started my hike later than planned.
The Gjipe-Jale Trail
Starting the Hike
I started my hike after spending the night and having breakfast at the Gjipe Eco Camping site.
I began my journey at around 9:00 AM.
Climbing up the mountain along the trail.
View of Gjipe Beach from the Trail
A short stop to take a memorable photo.
An unforgettable view of Gjipe Beach from the cliff where the trail runs.
In the distance, you can clearly see the road along the slope leading to the parking lot.
Trail Markers
There are painted markers along the trail. Three stripes in white-red-white colors are used.
Follow this sign: it will help you stay on the right path.
Important to know: The tricolor marker (white-red-white) is standard and can be found throughout Albania. I saw it all along the Albanian coast in different locations.
The trail often splits, and the marker helps you stay on the correct path.
You will have to navigate through thorny bushes.
Sometimes, the bushes close in, completely blocking the passage. If you wear shorts, as I did, you will definitely scratch your legs.
I wore sneakers. Other types of footwear are not suitable for this trail, as there is a risk of falling and getting injured.
Obstacles on the Trail: What to Expect
What obstacles will you encounter on the trail?
The trail passes through the natural landscapes of Albania.
You will have to:
-
Jump from rock to rock.
-
Step onto sharp rocky surfaces.
-
Sometimes walk along a narrow rocky edge near a cliff.
-
Push through dense bushes.
Overall, the trail is not difficult for young and physically fit individuals.
Keep in mind that the sun is strong, and the heat makes movement more challenging.
I never saw any reptiles or animals (such as dogs).
An Unexpected Challenge (Surprise)
At one point (near the end of the trail), the path led to a field of large boulders.
At first, this confused me — I wasn’t sure where to go to get back on the trail.
The correct solution: Keep walking straight as you were.
Maintain a direction parallel to the coastline.
After crossing the boulder field, you will emerge directly onto the continuation of the trail.
You will have to step (or jump) from one large boulder to another.
There is no other way through this section.
Tips for the Hike
Here are some recommendations:
-
Follow the white-red-white markers.
-
I highly recommend wearing sneakers. I hiked in sneakers.
-
Bring enough water. You will need it in the heat.
-
Nylon pants will protect your legs from scratches and cuts.
-
A lightweight backpack.
-
A phone case with a strap or a waist pouch to protect your phone from the sun and prevent overheating.
I scratched my legs on the bushes because I wore shorts.
A small backpack will help keep your hands free for taking photos.
The Rare Celestina Beach
This is where one of Albania’s most beautiful and pristine beaches is located.
It is about 30 meters wide, sandy, and difficult to access for the average person.
From the trail, you can descend to swim.
The distance from the trail to the beach is about 50 meters.
Usually, people arrive by boat to swim and admire the natural beauty of the coastline and sea.
End of the Trail
After crossing the boulder field, your hike will end in about 5 minutes.
The trail suddenly emerges onto the edge of a rocky road near a cliff. This is a dead-end road.
Path to Jale Beach
Walk straight ahead, and you will see a complex of modern hotels.
Tips:
-
Descend to the parking lot below: there is a staircase leading to the beach.
-
Do not take the asphalt road uphill, as I mistakenly did.
The steep uphill road does not lead to Jale Beach. I had to turn back.
There is only one way to the beach: at the lowest point. The gazebo at the parking lot is the entrance to the staircase down to the beach.
Conclusion of the Mountain Hike
The journey is complete.
The Gjipe-Jale mountain trail has been conquered. Every tourist will have unforgettable impressions.
You will visit both Jale Beach and Gjipe Beach.
