Glowing Vlora 2026 New Year sign in Vlora at night

New Year in Albania — What It’s Really Like in Vlora, weather, prices

New Year in Albania is very different from what residents of Europe and the USA are accustomed to. There are no large-scale city shows, Christmas markets, or tourist crowds.

It is, first and foremost, a family holiday, and only then — walks, cafes, and the sea.

I live in Vlora and want to tell you how New Year in Albania really passed: from December 31, 2025, to January 3, 2026. Without tourist embellishments, based on the real life of the city.

How New Year is Celebrated in Albania

New Year in Albania is celebrated mostly at home, with family. Unlike many European countries, Albanians rarely celebrate New Year in restaurants or public squares.

December 30 is the busiest day. On this day, everyone goes to stores, stocking up on food for several days. Stores are overcrowded, lines are long, especially in grocery supermarkets.

December 31 in Vlora: Quiet by Day, Fireworks by Night

On the evening of December 31, after 6:00 PM, the city of Vlorë looks unusually quiet. The streets are half-empty, cafes are open but have few visitors. It feels like the city is holding its breath before the holiday.

However, about 30 minutes before New Year, the streets come alive and fill with people — those setting off fireworks and spectators.

Then people disperse to their homes. Only some cafes have patrons. For example, the Broadway cafe on Lungomare was open at midnight and was crowded inside. Some establishments offered fixed-price festive menus for 100 euros, including drinks and light snacks.

At midnight, New Year in Albania is felt especially vividly. In Vlorë, there was no centralized fireworks display — fireworks were launched by the residents themselves. All along the seaside, on Lungomare, dozens of fireworks exploded in the sky simultaneously. It was loud, smoky, and truly festive.

New Year in Albania is celebrated similarly not only in Vlora but throughout the country.

Traditional New Year Food in Albania

There is one tradition that Albania and the USA share. The main New Year’s dish is turkey.

Almost every family cooks turkey for New Year. Before the holidays, turkeys are sold everywhere — in supermarkets, markets, small shops. It’s a mandatory element of the New Year’s table.

The cost of a turkey depends on the carcass.

A whole turkey costs about 4.5 euros/kg, a cut-up turkey about 6.5-7.0 euros/kg. At local bazaars, you can buy a live turkey — they are sold everywhere before New Year. After New Year, only male turkeys are sold in stores, while female turkeys are absent.

Traditional New Year Turkey Recipe

In Albanian families, turkey is usually cooked simply, without complex sauces.

The bird is thoroughly washed and dried. Then it’s rubbed with salt, black pepper, garlic, and olive oil. Half a lemon and about half a coffee cup of olive oil are placed inside.

It’s placed on a tray generously greased with olive oil, where 2 small glasses of water are added.

Vegetables are prepared separately, as are salads. Many Albanians prepare Greek salad — with green lettuce, olives, and soft white cheese.

The turkey is baked in the oven for about 45 minutes at a medium temperature of 180 degrees Celsius. Some baste the carcass with the released juices — do it as you like. As a result, the meat turns out tender, aromatic, and juicy.

This is not a restaurant dish but a home-cooked, family meal that symbolizes the holiday.

January 1 in Vlora: The City Comes Alive

If the city was quiet on December 31. Everything changes during the day on January 1. In Vlora, there were a lot of people. Cafes on Lungomare were almost completely full, with almost no free tables.

People love to come to Vlora for weekends and January 1 from Tirana and other Albanian cities. Families, couples, and businessmen often come. Because of this, there are many cars in the city, and the streets in Vlora are narrow, leading to small traffic jams.

This is clearly visible in the video of my bicycle ride on January 1 along Lungomare and through the city center.

Prices for New Year in Albania

One common question is whether prices rise for New Year in Albania. In my experience, there is no sharp price increase.

For example, on January 1 on Lungomare, a cup of coffee (macchiato or espresso) cost 90 lek (or 0.9 euros). This is the usual price for Vlorë in that location. I was given a receipt that listed: kafe – 3 copë × 90 lek = 270 lek.

For comparison, in a number of European countries, cafe prices are noticeably higher on holidays.

Weather for New Year in Albania

This 2026 New Year was cold by Vlora’s standards. The daytime temperature was about +6 degrees Celsius, at night it dropped to 0 or +2 degrees. There was a slight wind from the sea. However, in the sun it felt warmer, possibly up to 20 degrees.

In some places during the day (around 2:00 PM), water on the asphalt froze — a rare phenomenon for Vlorë. I even took a photo of ice instead of a puddle near the Muradi Mosque. The Kuzum Baba mountain peak cafe is visible in the distance.

It’s important to understand that Albania in winter is not resort warmth, especially by the sea.

Stores and Operations During the Holidays

On January 1 in Vlora, no stores were open, including grocery stores. Only cafes, restaurants, and bars were working.

  • On January 2, some supermarkets began to open, for example, BIG Market and Merkato.
  • On January 3, more stores opened, such as the HASO hypermarket.
  • On January 5, the Market TANI vegetable store and all other stores opened.

Banks, organizations, and offices also started working on Monday, January 5, 2026.

Therefore, important advice: buy food in advance, especially vegetables and fruits, if you plan to celebrate New Year in Albania.

Atmosphere and Impressions

Despite the cold weather, the atmosphere was very calm and pleasant. People were walking, sitting in cafes, looking at the sea, talking. There was no fuss, aggression, or rush.

The sun was shining brightly and created an excellent mood.

New Year in Albania is not a show, it’s life. Calm, human, and very real.

Before New Year, near the city theater, there was a small show with musical effects and music. And opposite the theater stands a New Year tree with ornaments and a five-pointed star on top.

There is also a children’s playground with attractions and entertainment.

And on Lungomare, there are many light installations. For example, at the beginning of Lungomare near the Square of War, a glowing model of a round grenade with a passage in the shape of a five-pointed star is installed.
