Crucial Gate Updates and Trailhead Location
As of September 1st, the main asphalt road to Kakome Beach is closed to vehicles. Professional security guards in brown uniforms watch the iron gate twenty-four hours a day.
The gates on the road are closed after the end of the beach season.
You must leave your rental car on the roadside near this guarded checkpoint. The actual trail to Krorez branches off to the right just before the main gate.
👉 Important: Look for a small metal signpost near the dirt road turnoff. This is the only land path connecting the highway area to the isolated beach.
How to Reach Krorez Beach: Signpost by the Road
Before reaching the gate, there is a right turn onto a dirt road.
This is where you need to turn right and continue along the road.
First Stop: The Old Monastery of Saint Mary
The rocky dirt road leads travelers upward toward the historical Monastery of Saint Mary. You will reach this medieval stone landmark after walking exactly 500 meters from the gate.

The inactive monastery stands on an elevated hill and offers panoramic views of the bay. Take ten minutes to explore the old stone courtyard and enjoy the scenery.
💡 My Advice: Mountain reception can be very poor near these stone walls. I always activate a reliable local eSIM via Airalo or Butesim before leaving Saranda to keep my maps working online.
Climbing to the Mountain Peak and Bunker
After the first monastery, the path narrows and turns into a steep mountain trail. The active ascent requires good physical endurance and lasts about 35 minutes.
The trail offers views of Kakoma and the surrounding area.
You will eventually reach the highest point of the ridge, marked by an old military bunker. This concrete bunker is overgrown with wild shrubs but serves as a great orientation landmark.
Take a short rest here and drink some water before starting your steep descent. The surrounding landscape shows the raw and untouched beauty of the Albanian Riviera.
How to Avoid Getting Lost on the Descent
The descent from the bunker to the shore features several tricky sections. The path turns sharply in opposite directions, and many hikers easily lose the main track.
There are signs along the trail indicating the correct direction.
Local volunteers painted trail markers on large rocks and trees along the route. Follow the official white-and-red stripes carefully during your walk.
👉 Important: Near the ridge end, the wide path continues straight, but you must take a sharp, hidden left turn downward. Follow the last painted stripe on the rock, not the wide dirt track. I almost got lost here until a local shepherd showed me the correct way down.
Final Stretch: Krorez Monastery and the Beach
Near the end of the descent, you will pass a second historical site. The small, ancient Krorez Monastery stands just 100 meters away from the actual beach sand.

The total walking distance from the Kakome signpost to the sea is 3.2 kilometers. The entire one-way hike takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your physical fitness.
Tourists love the exoticism of Kroreza beach hiking trail.
The trail ends near a small local cafe in the center of the beach. You can finally swim in the crystal-clear Ionian Sea and enjoy a cold drink.
Practical Summary for Independent Hikers
The walk uphill takes about 40 minutes, and the steep descent takes another 30 minutes. Always wear sturdy sport shoes and carry at least two liters of drinking water per person.
👉 If you prefer to skip the challenging hike, you can book standard boat excursions from the Saranda marina. Learn more about regional coastal routes in my detailed guide about Kakome Beach, Albania.
