Beaches Near Himara — Llamani, Livadi & Aquarium Bay Guide
The main beaches near Himara are Llamani, Livadi and Aquarium. Here’s a guide to each beach and how to reach them.
Llamani Beach: South of Himara
Llamani Beach is located on the Albanian Riviera, south of Himara.
It sits in a scenic lagoon surrounded by steep volcanic cliffs.
The beach is about 200 meters long and up to 30 meters wide. The shore is covered with typical white Albanian sand.
Highlights:
- a secluded lagoon protected by cliffs,
- well-developed infrastructure with restaurants and summer bars,
- beautiful mountain views,
- close enough to Himara to walk if needed.
Beach coordinates: 40.080942, 19.766712
Road to Llamani Beach
The drive from Himara takes about 5 minutes.
Near the turnoff, there are two abandoned bunkers — a curious sight for those interested in Albania’s history.
Tip: the bunkers are overgrown with thorny bushes, so wear jeans if you plan to explore inside.
Turnoff coordinates: 40.085362, 19.767600
Livadi Beach: North of Himara
Livadi is about a 15-minute drive from Himara.
The beach stretches around 1.5 km in length and is about 30 meters wide.
Highlights:
- sandy shore with typical Albanian sand,
- clear, transparent sea,
- beautiful mountain scenery,
- starting point of the trail to Aquarium Beach,
- Himara Castle is nearby.
From the beach, you can see Himara Castle on a hilltop. The area is surrounded by restaurants, hotels, summer bars, guesthouses, and parking lots.
Trailhead coordinates to Aquarium: 40.110276, 19.719507
Road to Livadi Beach
It takes 5–10 minutes to reach the beach by car from Himara.
The road descends from Himara Castle down to the sea, with sharp curves and scenic views along the way.
Aquarium Beach
Aquarium Beach is a small, hidden lagoon located beyond the ridge behind Livadi.
It’s a tiny beach — about 25 meters long and 10 meters wide — enclosed by sharp volcanic rocks.
Important: the sand here is sharp and coarse. Walking barefoot is not recommended.
Tip: wear water shoes and bring a thick mat for sitting or lying down.
I even damaged my sneakers trying to climb across the rocks to the water — the volcanic stones are extremely sharp.
Highlights:
- soft yellowish sand at the shoreline, formed from clay washed down by the sea,
- clear, clean water,
- seabed of smooth stone or sand, with a depth of 2 meters just 6 meters from shore,
- you can swim between the cliffs — the experience is unforgettable.
Occasionally, tour boats approach the area, but they don’t enter the lagoon.
Aquarium Beach coordinates: 40.112912, 19.712551
Trail to Aquarium Beach
The trail begins at the far right end of Livadi Beach. It’s a short hike with amazing views.
Part of the trail involves climbing over rocks.
At the top, you’ll find a former machine gun bunker — now a great photo spot.
Follow the paint markings on stones (white–red–white) to stay on the trail.
Tip: wear sneakers, not flip-flops. The path runs close to the edge and can be risky in places.
Wild Beach
Located 100 meters north of Aquarium Beach, Wild Beach is about 30 meters long and 10 meters wide.
Swimming here is difficult:
- the seabed is full of slippery rocks,
- water is shallow for about 20 meters from shore,
- the gravel is sharp and uncomfortable.
This beach is for adventurers and those seeking something different. It’s also a good spot to watch fish swimming between the rocks.
Tip: wear water shoes to walk safely.
Also:
- there’s a small seasonal beach bar,
- the sea views are beautiful,
- you can swim at nearby Aquarium Beach,
- few tourists come here,
- great for snorkeling and exploring marine life.
Beach coordinates: 40.113365, 19.710981
Road to Aquarium and Wild Beaches
There are two ways to reach these beaches: by car or on foot via the trail from Livadi.
Standard cars won’t make it all the way — only 4×4 vehicles can reach the shore.
You’ll need to park about 300 meters uphill from the beach.
Tip: don’t risk driving all the way down in a regular car. The road is rocky and uneven.
I saw several drivers stop in confusion, unsure how to proceed further.
Check the road photos and decide for yourself.
Lagoons Along the Coast
Between Jale Beach and Aquarium Beach, you’ll find more secluded spots for swimming.
If you’re looking for wild beaches, this area has plenty of hidden gems.
