Based on my personal field trips exploring this coastline, I have compiled a complete logistical guide: how to get here by car or on foot, what gear you must bring, where to park, and how to stay safe on the sharp volcanic rocks.

The Shore Near Aquarium Beach

The scenic Aquarium Beach Albania is uniquely located among dramatic rocks of volcanic origin. Its coastline measures approximately 25 meters long and up to 10 meters wide.

Creating a spectacular natural amphitheater, the surrounding volcanic cliffs stand 6 to 8 meters high.

Tiny fragments of volcanic glass form the unique sand here. These sharp edges can easily cut the skin, making it virtually impossible to walk barefoot. Continuous wave action constantly shapes this glass into a special, sharp type of sand.

However, a soft yellow strip stretches right at the water’s edge. This interesting contrast comes from the nearby clay cliff, eroded by waves for thousands of years.

💡 My observation: Walking along the entire Ionian coast, I occasionally found soft yellow sand near the water. Such spots were always located near clay-heavy cliffs. For instance, the beach near the Amar bar confirms this fact, sitting right under a large clay wall.

Sea and Shoreline

The lagoon features clear blue water with a striking greenish tint in the shallow areas.

The seabed in the lagoon consists of small pebbles and two wide, flat stone slabs. These natural solid slabs slope gently and help swimmers stand steadily on the bottom.

The water depth increases predictably: it reaches 1.5 meters at 5 meters from the shore, and deepens to 2.5 meters 8 meters out.

Towering cliffs between 6 and 8 meters high completely enclose the beach. Around the lagoon, the surrounding rocks are extremely sharp and can easily ruin shoe soles if you try to hike across them without proper footwear.

Routes to Aquarium Beach Albania

You can choose from three completely different routes to reach the beach depending on your travel style and vehicle.

Trail from Livadi Beach (On Foot)

You can walk to Aquarium Beach Albania from Livadi Beach by crossing the nearby low hill.

The mountain trail is clearly marked with red-and-white signs painted directly on the rocks, making it easy to follow.

The path climbs along the cliffside, passes through a small forest, and eventually leads to a dirt road. It offers panoramic views of the bay, the mountains, and Himara Fortress.

Coastal Panorama

After the forest section, you will come out onto an unpaved road that passes right by Aquarium Beach. Follow the road and turn left at the fork near the sea to arrive directly at the beach.

The main road continues along the coastline toward Jale Beach. This section consists of steep volcanic cliffs covered with coastal shrubs and forest.

Road Along the Coast from Jale Beach (By Car or Foot)

You can also reach Aquarium Beach Albania from Jale Beach taking the coastal unpaved road. The total distance between the beaches is about 1.5 kilometers.

Regular cars can drive as far as Wild Beach. Beyond this point, the road becomes too rough. Park your vehicle there and walk the final 150 meters on foot.

Road from Himara Village (By Car)

From the main road near Himara, you can drive part of the way toward the beach. However, the last 300 meters are completely impassable for standard passenger cars.

Large rock outcrops stick out in the middle of the road. Only high-clearance 4×4 vehicles can pass through. Do not risk driving a regular sedan here — I have personally seen several cars get stuck.

Tourist Information & Infrastructure

Aquarium Beach remains in its natural, untouched state. There are no sun umbrellas, wooden walkways, or paid sunbeds on the sand.

A small beach bar operates at neighboring Wild Beach about 150 meters away. There are no hotels directly on the bay. The nearest campsite is located at Jale Beach, roughly 1.5 kilometers away.

Cliff Diving and Snorkeling

This location is a paradise for cliff diving enthusiasts. The average water depth right below the surrounding cliffs is around 4 meters.

Snorkeling in the bay is exceptional due to the pristine water clarity and underwater rock formations. Be careful when climbing over the cliffs, as the volcanic edges are extremely sharp.

Helpful Packing Checklist

To enjoy your time at Aquarium Beach safely, make sure to bring:

• Plenty of fresh drinking water (at least 1.5–2 liters per person);
