Aquarium Beach — Volcanic Glass Sand of the Albanian Riviera

Aquarium Beach in Albania

Aquarium Beach is the pearl of Albania, popular among tourists due to its clear water and seclusion.

Aquarium Beach is a unique compact beach on the Ionian coast of the Albanian Riviera.

It is located between the beaches of Jale and Livadi.

You can get to the beach both by car and on foot.

The Shore Near Aquarium Beach

Aquarium Beach is located among the rocks of volcanic origin.

The length of the coastline is approximately 25 meters, and the width is up to 10 meters. Volcanic rocks are from 8 to 10 meters high.

The sand on the beach is fragments of volcanic glass, which cut the skin on your feet.

It is impossible to walk barefoot on the beach because of the sharp edges of the grains of sand. Under the influence of sea waves, volcanic glass turns into special sharp sand.

But the sand at the edge of the water is soft yellow. This effect is caused by the clay on the cliff, which has been eroded by the waves for thousands of years.

Information. Walking along the entire coast of the Ionian Sea, in some places I found soft yellow sand near the edge of the sea. These places were always near a cliff, which contained clay.

The beach near the Amar bar confirms this fact. It is located near a clay cliff.

Sea and Shoreline

The lagoon has clear blue water with a greenish tint in the shallow areas.

The seabed in the lagoon consists of small pebbles and two wide, flat stone slabs.

These natural solid slabs slope gently and help swimmers stand steadily on the bottom.

Water depth: 1.5 meters at 5 meters from the shore, and 2.5 meters at 7–8 meters out.

The beach is surrounded by cliffs about 8–10 meters high.

In fact, the coast in this part is impassable.

The rocks are so sharp that walking on them can easily ruin your shoe soles.

Routes to Aquarium Beach

Trail from Livadi Beach

You can walk to Aquarium from Livadi Beach.

You just need to cross the nearby low hill.

Important: The mountain trail is marked with red-white-red signs on the rocks.

It climbs along the cliffside, then passes through a small forest and leads to a dirt road.

The trail from Livadi Beach goes through the hills along the edge of the cliff.

It offers beautiful panoramic views of the bay, the mountains, and Himara Fortress.

Coastal Panorama

After the forest section, you’ll come out onto a road. This road passes by Aquarium Beach.

Follow the road, and at the fork near the sea, turn left — you’ll arrive at the beach.

The main road continues along the coastline toward Jale Beach.

This part of the coast is made up of steep volcanic cliffs, covered with forest and bushes.

Road Along the Coast from Jale Beach

You can also get to Aquarium Beach from Jale Beach by taking the road that follows the coastline.

The road between the beaches is unpaved and suitable for regular cars. The distance is about 1.5 kilometers.

You can drive as far as Wild Beach. After that, the road becomes difficult to navigate.

Tip: Leave your car and walk the final 150 meters on foot.

Road from the Village of Himara

From the main road near the village of Himara, you can drive part of the way to Aquarium Beach, but not all the way.

The last 300 meters are impassable by car.

Rock outcrops stick out in the middle of the road, making it impossible to go around them.

Advice: I recommend not risking it — I’ve personally seen a few unlucky drivers get stuck.

Only an off-road vehicle can make it through.

Tourist Information

Aquarium Beach is a great example of Albania’s untouched natural beauty.

For this reason, it remains in its natural state and is not equipped in any way.

There are no sun umbrellas or wooden walkways.

A small beach bar is located at the neighboring Wild Beach, about 150 meters from Aquarium Beach.

There are no hotels or hostels nearby.

Important: The nearest tent camping site is at Jale Beach, about 1.5 kilometers away.

The beach is difficult to access: the last 150–300 meters must be done on foot.

Cliff Diving and Snorkeling

The beach is surrounded by interesting rock formations on all sides.

The edges of the rocks are sharp, and you’ll need some agility to climb over them to reach the water.

I tried exploring them and ended up slightly damaging the sole of one of my sneakers.

For cliff diving enthusiasts, he is a perfect spot. The average depth near the cliffs is around 4 meters.

Snorkeling lovers — swimming at the surface with a mask and snorkel — will also find the beach ideal.
